taking the good to make it better
I think that the goals mentioned for AUPS and the blogs I read about the schools trying to implement computers and ubiquitous computing in the classroom were quite positive. Unfortunately I see schools struggling to follow through on ALL of the goals of AUPs. Many tend to get stuck on one that says, "Define and describe practices and applications that are prohibited by the administration and the consequences for using the information infrastructure in these ways" (http://landmark-project.com/aup20/pmwiki.php?n=Main.Overview). Obviously it is a big deal if students are not following this rule, and I think those in leadership fear students will break this rule so they simply continue to state what is not allowed with the technology instead of focusing on the good. They spend time telling the students what not to do instead of encouraging them to: 'find interesting pictures to print out for art class', or 'create a power point to present a short history lesson to the class', or create a map on their computer and then print it out and have the other students fill it in', the possibilities are endless, but we often fail to give them a chance to get to the point of using computers and technology correctly.
